Last week we had a number of calls from commercial customers who had incurred damage to their awnings in the high winds. Most conventional awnings meet Class 2 on the official CE wind speed ratings and this is only 18/20mph so the wind speeds we experienced in London of 50mph or more were far in excess of this; resulting in fallen trees and even the roof of the famous Epsom Racecourse was severely damaged.

When high winds are expected you really must retract your outside awning - follow the guidelines below.

Always retract your awning if the site is unattended

Retract the awning if high winds or snow are anticipated

Fit an anemometer to an electric awning (automatic wind sensor) - but never discontect the power.

Awnings and Freezing Weather

Last year the cold weather caught many of us out and we had a number of call where customers had incurred damage to their awnings by leaving them out in the snow. Strong as a Deans sun awning is - it is not designed to work in snowy conditions or where there is a danger the mechansim might freeze. So follow these useful hints :

Don't use your awning if you think some parts of the mechanism are frozen.

If the forecast is for snow make sure your awning is closed.

If it is wet and you anticipate the weather might turn very cold retract the awning before ice can form, at the first opportunity open the awning to allow it to dry.

If you have left the awning out and it has become frozen it may be possible to free up the mechanism with a hair dryer but, if in doubt, call us for assistance.

Weather Screens at The Ranelagh

There was a requirement for the screens to be completely retractable and, when in place, should also allow customers to enjoy views of the garden and be able to see their children in the garden play area of the popular Ranelagh pub in North London.

New awnings for St Mary's Bryanston

St Mary’s Bryanston CofE Primary School has a long tradition of providing a good education and aims to provide a full curriculum to all children.

They have previously reduced classroom heat build up with the use of air conditioning. However, by preventing the sun from reaching the windows with awnings they were able to significantly reduce solar gain without increasing the consumption of energy and thereby also reducing the carbon footprint.

Working with the contractor, Marylebone Interiors, Deans’ Vice President system was specified together with Swela dralon awning fabrics using an automatic control system by Somfy to ensure a controlled environment for the pupils. A vibrabox sensor controls in the front profiles for retraction in windy conditions.

Deans installed the awnings on special brackets and the final result was a visually fun scheme of red, cream and green colours against the cream background of the school.

Mr Peter Hadfield, Head Teacher commented in the school News Letter “The awnings outside Year 1, 2 and 3 were installed over the Easter holiday and they shade the classroom windows perfectly”. He also acknowledged the part played by the Rose Foundation for their contribution to the costs, which made the project possible.

What do I do if my awning is frozen?

The first thing is DO NOT OPERATE THE AWNING WHEN FROZEN, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS AN ELECTRIC AWNING! The possibility is the motor will unwind insde the cassette box which cannot open. Then, when the awning thaws, it could bounce out suddenly with great force causing damage.

Your awning should not be left open if freezing weather is expected.
It should not be left out in the snow.
If it is frozen do nothing until defrosted and, if you have attempted to unwind it, do not stand in front of the awning as a sudden thawing may cause the awning to spring open.

TYPES OF EXTERNAL BLINDS AND AWNINGS

Folding arm awning
Folding arm awnings (also known as foldaway awnings) have, in the past 25 years, almost replaced the traditional awning (see below). The folding arm is a very versatile awning. It allows an excellent view outside and is now popular on domestic properties.

Drop arm and sliding arm blinds
The front profile of a drop arm blind lowers by gravity and is fixed to side arms that fall from a pivot point. This is the simplest form of awning that is ideally suited to shorter drop windows.

Dutch (continental) blinds
A popular external blind and is widely used on shops, restaurants, hotels and on domestic properties.

Traditional awnings
The “traditional” blind, as we know it today, was the standard form of shop blind before the introduction of folding arms.

QUALITY AND SAFETY

External sunblinds and awnings are primarily designed to provide shade, and not shelter in inclement conditions such as rain or wind. There will be times when a blind is left out in gusty conditions. A strong gust of wind can subject a sunblind to considerable forces which could damage it, and even the building on which it is fixed.

The last year has seen an upsurge in new products coming onto the market. It is important to realise that, as in many things in life, there are differences with products. Unfortunately some products are not all they may seem to be, and there are a number of sub-standard external blinds and awnings appearing on the market.

Whilst, superficially, looking identical to some of the long-established European makes of awning, apart from a light weight cloth, the whole frame and many of the components are much lighter. Not only does this mean they will be weaker, less durable and not last as long, but there is also a safety issue. A strong gust of wind can bend or even break poor components.

In fact, the European Construction Products Directive requires that external sunblinds and awnings meet minimum standards regarding resistance to wind. Does the sunblind/awning you are considering meet these requirements?

FITTING

It is vital that an external blind or awning is correctly fitted. Can they be fitted by the DIY enthusiast? Theoretically, they can, but they are best left to the expert. An awning can be heavy, some have powerful springs in the folding arms and usually a minimum of two people are needed to carry out the work.

Then there is the question of the building onto which it is going to be fitted: brick, breeze block, cavity wall, steel structure etc. What type of fastening should be used? Fastening technology is highly developed and there are many different types of fastener, suitable for different applications, including screws, expanding bolts and chemical fixings. Knowing what is right for the job only comes through training and experience.

· Expanding bolts can cause brickwork to crack – making it weaker.
· Fixing an external blind or awning to a single-storey building requires the use of spreader plates or “bungalow brackets”.

CARE OF YOUR SUNBLIND AND AWNING

· External sunblinds and awnings are specifically intended as providers of shade and are not to be left out in windy conditions. They can withstand a surprising amount of wind and rain, but they are not designed for this sort of application. If the awning will be left unattended then it is recommended that it is retracted. This can be done manually or there are automatic options which will ensure the awning retracts automatically in adverse weather.
· You may leave the awning out in light rain but allow it to dry as soon as possible before retracting it.

· External blinds and awnings are not play-things. Do not allow anyone to swing on the arms!

· If you have a problem with your awning, get it checked by a professional.

Don't allow dirt to accumulate on top of your blind. Gently brush off loose objects like leaves and twigs before attempting to retract the blind.

Hose the blind down from time to time but allow the fabric to dry thoroughly before closing the blind. When it's time for a more thorough cleaning, use a mild soap (not a detergent) and immediately rinse away every trace of residue. Never use a harsh cleaning fluid or an abrasive.

You can use a vinyl cleaner if your blind is of the reinforced P.V.C. or shiny plastic type but take care over the areas that have been signwritten or screen printed.

Be Gentle With It
Raise and lower it carefully. Don't jerk on the mechanism or over-wind the controls.

Note that on flat awnings the cover must always roll over the roller.

Avoid hanging anything on the frame work or allowing objects, particularly cigarettes, to fall on the cover.

When not in use do not leave a retractable blind in the open position. This minimises the possibility of damage due to vandalism or extremes of weather.

Never leave your blind out during windy weather or when bad weather is expected.

When it's time to refurbish the blind with a new cover, or if it's ever necessary to make extensive repairs, call us. (Recovering may be less expensive and quicker during the winter months.)
